Ms. Allene (Ward) Couch, age 98 of Douglasville, died Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at her home. She was born in Dahlonega as the youngest of 11 siblings plus one nephew who grew up with her as a brother. She was raised in Mt. Vernon before moving to Atlanta during World War II, and then lived the last 40 years of her life in Douglasville. Allene retired from A&P grocery store after working there for over 50 years. After retiring, she worked in the engineering book store on the Georgia Tech campus. She was Baptist by faith and a member of First Baptist Church of Atlanta where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was an avid competitive bowler and was a part of many Douglasville bowling leagues, still bowling strikes at 93 years old. She loved traveling, near or far, and she also loved the Atlanta Braves. Most of all, she loved her family and spending time with all of them. Allene was preceded in death by her parents, William and Sarah Ward; six brothers, Fred Abee, Eugene, Alex, Tommy, William (Sonny), and Jim Ward; five sisters, Hazel Tharpe, Grace Lawler, Louise Thigpen, Elsie Mae O’Conner, and Cora Lee Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.
Allene is survived by two daughters, Diane George, and Teresa Noles and husband David, all of Douglasville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends in the chapel of Wilkes Funeral Home on Monday, December 11, 2023 from 12:00pm until just prior to the service.
The funeral service will be held Monday, December 11th at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Wilkes Funeral Home with Reverend Ron Branham officiating. The burial will follow at Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.
The family will gather at Tabernacle Baptist Church for fellowship and refreshments following the burial.
