John Sasser Obituary

Mr. John O’Conner Sasser, age 72, died Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Oxley Park Health and Rehabilitation in Lyons. Born on March 3, 1951, he was a native and lifelong resident of Savannah, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie (Billy) O’Conner Sasser, June Marcelle (Hargrave), one brother, Robert, one sister, Melody Sasser, and his beloved wife of 24 years, Annette.

John was a third-generation shrimper and fisherman. He spent two years at the Military Riverside Academy and joined the Air National Guard in 1970. In 1972, he completed training in electronics at Kessler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi, and served six years in the Air National Guard.

Following basic training, John returned home to Savannah. He obtained his Captain’s license and continued to work alongside his father in the seafood business. John and his sister Ceryle  sold seafood to markets from Florida to New York for many years through the family business Sasser’s Seafood and Boatworks.

In 1999, John married Annette (Drawdy). Together, they served in various facets of ministry, which included over twenty years of leadership with the Christian Boater’s Association (CBA). Four months ago, when Annette passed away, the loss was truly more than John could bear. All he ever wanted was to be with Jesus and his wife, Annette. Now, his heart is whole again as he is no doubt walking and dancing with them both at this very moment.

John is survived by one sister, Ceryle (Charlie) Stewart; two children whom he loved dearly as a true father— Teri (Clint) Williams and Rick (Elizabeth) Johnson; eight grandchildren—Anna (Noah) Bullard, Erin (Canaan) Banks, Micah (Candace) Williams, Ruth (Mason) English, Jacob (Sara) Laurence, Jonathan (Alice) Johnson, Isabella Johnson, Kelly Cassiel (Nate) Wiehn; eighteen great-grandchildren—Ellie (R’ien) Perez, Ava Bullard, Lily Bullard, Scout Banks, River Banks, Forest Banks, Hadley Williams, Scarlett Williams, Boone Williams, Daniel English, Arthur English, Drake Lawrence, Alex Lawrence, Samara Lawrence, Evolet Johnson, Zion Johnson, Felicity Johnson, and Zuriel Johnson; one great-great-grandson—Ben Perez; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, December 15 from 2:30 p.m. until just prior to the service.

The funeral will be held on Friday, December 15, at 3:30 p.m. at the Wilkes Funeral Home Chapel in Vidalia, with Rev. Clint Williams officiating. Interment led by Rev. Rick Johnson will follow at the Pinecrest Cemetery.
