Miss Kim Holec, age 68 of Collins, died Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia after a brief illness. She was born in Savannah and lived in the Atlanta area for many years before moving to Collins in 2022. Kim attended the University of Georgia in the 1970s, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English while at school there. She was an active member of the University of Georgia Science Fiction Appreciation Club, and published work in their clubzine, Aphelion. For many years, Kim was a regular attendee of regional Science Fiction conventions around the southeast. She was also one of the earliest members of the branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism founded in 1976. This was Bryn Madoc, and her early service there included being their first Chronicler, producing the group newsletter, the Voice of Madoc, and serving as an early Herald for Madoc. For these and other services to the group, she was awarded Bryn Madoc's highest service award, the Order of the Dreamstone, in 1982. She had a Welsh persona in the SCA, and was known there as Lady Deidre ferch Corwyn d'Arcy. Kim was known to be a woman of conviction, and someone whose loyalty and commitment to her passions were at the heart of everything she did. A friend described Kim as, “the kind of friend who would take a phone call at 2 a.m. and then let you come over and stay at her place after someone broke into the house next door to yours. I know, because she did that for me." Kim was preceded in death by her parents, John Francis Holec and Evelyn Moore Holec.
Kim is survived by her beloved partner of twenty-one years, Michael Langford of Collins; one brother, Greg Holec of Macon; her two cats, Tippi and Screechy; and many special friends.
No services are planned at this time.
