Lessie Mae “Lett” Callahan Toler, age 89, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania following a brief illness.
Lett was born in Tarrytown, Georgia on August 15, 1934, or as she liked to say it, “between tobacco and cotton.” Her love for reading and poetry led her to pursue a degree in teaching secondary English which she was able to complete at LaGrange College through the generosity of others who saw her gifts and intelligence. In 1957, she met and married Hawkinsville, Georgia high school football star, Eddie Toler. Together they moved to Plant City, Florida where they raised their children, Scott and Beth, and where she enjoyed a forty-year career as an Elementary and Secondary School Educator. After being widowed young, Lett re-connected with her high school sweetheart, Mike Adams and enjoyed retired life in the Northeast Georgia mountains. For the last years of her life, Lett resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she passed away peacefully under the watchful care of family and friends.
Lett lived as a woman of great faith, as well as a loving mother, wife, sister, and daughter. She loved to read, go for walks, take care of her children, spend time with family, and sit on the swing and watch night come at the cabin. Lett was known for her sweetness and kindness to everyone who knew her. Now there is one less angel on earth, and one more angel in heaven.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Franklin Callahan and Mary Hutcheson Callahan; husband, Eddie Clyde Toler; friend/partner, Michael Cloye Adams; sister Dorothy Craft Keen; and brothers, Ira Lee Callahan and Oscar Franklin Callahan.
She is survived by the apple of her eye, the granddaughter who brought a smile to her face until the end, Sarah Joy Toler. She also is survived by her son Edward Scott Toler (Lauri) of Plant City, Florida; daughter Mary Elizabeth Toler (Kayla) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; sister, Jewell Martha Callahan of Atlanta, Georgia; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Wilkes Funeral Home in Vidalia, GA: 1722 Mount Vernon Road, Vidalia, GA 30474. Visitation is at 10am. Funeral Service is at 11am. Internment immediately following the service at the Tarrytown Cemetery, Tarrytown, GA 30471
